Valve continue their reign of free updates to their games, this time they are updating DoD to use their community to track stats, add achievements, and integrate the game with steam in the same way TF2 does.

Leveraging the recently released set of free services available in Steamworks, the Palermo Update adds 51 achievements to Day of Defeat: Source, player avatar displays in the scoreboard and win panel, and detailed player statistics that are integrated with the Steam Community features (www.steamcommunity.com).

In addition, this update adds support for popular features introduced in Valve's Team Fortress 2 (TF2), the PC title named multiplayer game of the year by Gamespy.com and PC Gamer. These include "nemesis/revenge" freeze cam and new effects driven by the particle system introduced to the Source engine for TF2.

Finally, this update also introduces a new map, Palermo, which is a remix of the most popular community map, dod_salerno, originally created by Magnar "insta" Jennsen.

For more information, visit the Day of Defeat: Source Palermo site.

I hardly play DoD anymore, but I might just give it a try with this new update!

Glad to see they are committed. Won't be going back to it on a hardcore level though.

I've been playing it a bit instead of TF2, it's really quite good, but quite ahrd to get used to the hit detection and face paced gameplay. The new map is really good too, though I think the achievements are really hard to get, half of them are just "get 500 kills with this weapon" sort of afairs, while others are just really hard to get :D.

Just played a bit in the free week-end and all I can say is stay away, the update makes it moee or less EXACTLY like TF2, but only it is set in WW2.

I have to disagree Vox, the update doesnt change anything in terms of gameplay, so I don't see how if it wasnt like TF2 before, that it is now. Maybe they were just alike to begin with.

Well from what I can remember it has always been sort of like TF2, but the way Valve are doing their updates with the avatar in the scoreboard and the achievements, they all seem pretty much alike from what I can see.

Ok, so they made the interface consistant with the style of their other multiplayer games, a style that works well and benefits the game. They're also giving away 2 days of the game for free, new achievements and maps will bring players back to the game and make it more active, what's wrong?

Gears of War has achievements, Trackmania has avatars on the scoreboard, I fail to see any meat in your argument.

I played it again just now and it's all right, I have a habit of really not liking games the first time round but loving them after that. But IMO you still run too fast.

Bugger off DE. (Pretty good joke though xD)

I think DoD and CoD are very different playstyles, you can't really compare them just because they are (were) both WW2. DoD is much more arcadey and fast paced, while CoD can be fast paced, but it requires more thinking and tactical awareness to be good. I guess it's down to personal preference, I like steam games because you can just jump into them when you fancy a quick game of something.
