I'm bored, so I decided I'd post up a few screenshots of my current favourite game... Fallout 3. The background and setting can be depressing, and playing it does make you feel very alone. But the tragedy has really brought the game to life for me, and most of the screenshots I take reflect that. :)

That's my dog, Dogmeat, and my character. Sporting a leather armour and an assault rifle. Behind me are a highway and the remains of Washington DC.

http://img373.imageshack.us/img373/screenshot6fk9.png/1/w640.png (http://g.imageshack.us/img373/screenshot6fk9.png/1/)

The National Mall, off screen behind my character is the Washington and Lincoln Memorials. In Front is the Capitol building where congress met... once. Now the only meetings there involve guns and blood.

http://img373.imageshack.us/img373/screenshot24wa6.png/1/w640.png (http://g.imageshack.us/img373/screenshot24wa6.png/1/)

These two screenshots should give you the scale of the place, I could walk to the far end of those screenshots and probably much further, a lot of it is quite unpopulated, towns are small and spread thin. Out in the wastes you truly are alone. And it's so very atmospheric: the music, the sounds around you, the size, the sheer scale, along with the plot, really really pulls this off well.

http://img386.imageshack.us/img386/screenshot25bw6.png/1/w640.png (http://g.imageshack.us/img386/screenshot25bw6.png/1/)

And lastly, my character in a bar. I've spent plenty of times just sitting there, listening to the radio, which plays a mixture of 1950's music (Inkspots "I don't want to set the world on fire." is my favourite), public service announcements and news, usually about something I've done.

It's just simply... stunning to play, its plays on its theme well, the world is a cruel place, and the best ending you can hope for is always bittersweet.

Yup, got this on Monday, been playing it loads, very very good. There are quite a few texture mods that you can download, I'll try to get some screenshots of mine up.

EDIT: I just discovered this radar station. Quite a view from up there eh? (Click here for 1920x1200 xD) (http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/9452/fallout3cb7.jpg)

Looks awesome, do you prefer it to Far Cry 2?

Far Cry 2 sucks in comparison.

By far, put it this way, some games make you feel like you're there (Far Cry 2, Crysis.. etc), others make you *want* to be there. Fallout 3 is the latter, an accomplishment for a game set in an irradiated wasteland.

And Phantom, that it soooo odd, I just quit my game and... was at a radar station! By the way, I suggest going to the Scrapyard, it's south of a place called Minefield and quite far north-east of Vault 101. It has something special, I assure you. :)

Nice pics guys :D

Im really liking fallout 3, best thing so far has been all the moral choices. For example i rescued a kid from giant ants then was looking for a place for him to live but whilst looking i found a settlement that needed being protected so i jumped in and saved them.
Then after that i found a slave camp: the leader asked if i knew a ready source of slaves and would i be able to get any children for him (Spooky i know)

Have a guess what i did :o

Used your Fat Boy on the slaver camp. Because you're a nice person xD.

Lol as if, I bet you rounded up them slaves and sent them to their D0000M!

When I went to the slaver camp, I err... I think I talked to one guy. But then I went in guns blazing, killing every last damn slaver. I rescued all the slaves I could (there was one crazy old man who wouldn't go...) and felt good about myself. Because I got to keep all their munitons and medical supplies, and also managed to combine mass homocide with being a hero.

But i'm guessing you're not quite the white (but very bloody) knight and sold the kid to see what it's like? :P

Trigger

Close, i couldnt sell the kid off for some reason ( It was his eyes, his dam sobbing eyes) found him a home instead so to balance this off i went and caught 4 people instead though 1 still averts me grrrr :D

Oh and then headed to the local Brothel :p

You guy's don't get half of the jokes though :P Being a massive massive massive massive massive massive fan of the series I found Fallout 3 to be absolutely amazing, bethesda really have brought this game alive.. Guess which game I'm getting first when I get a new 'puter :D

This game is absolutely huge... and I sooooooo want to get my own copy, not just playing it at a friends :(

Calneon
6th December 2008, 07:12 PM
It's not as big as Oblivion in terms of map size actually. Doesn't detract anything, just pointing it out. I found the slaver camp you were on about Trigger, gonna go get me a slave xD.

I don't? There is a great line in the quest All Trouble on the Home Front, it goes something like: "You're a hero, and, you have to leave." Or those lovely intelligence increasing mints "Mentats", heck thats not even mentioning the Alien Blaster! :P

But yes, it's funny how a series with such rose-tinted glasses applied to it is actually liked by many of the jaded old men who always think it was better in the old days. :D

Vicious Horizon
6th December 2008, 07:30 PM
Ah, you do get those then, I guess you played Fallout 1 then. Dogmeat also ;D

I didn't choose a female character as I was worried they'd look bollocks in an effort for political correctness and sexuality equality rubbish, but they look pretty good actually.

Aside from the fact that most female NPC's all having the "Wendy the Welder" haircut, along with my PC.

... And Rosie the Riveter is better looking anyway.

Thanks to some translation from VoX (cheers VoX) I can now say, yes, my avatar is real. You get the title Last, Best Hope for Humanity by being Very Good (well duh..) and level 20. :)

Or alternatively watch Babylon 5.

Bloo

Yeah, just moved all the Fallout 3 related posts from the L4D forum to the Fallout 3 one, to keep on-topic and all. :p

And Trig, I tried to be evil but gave up and now my second playthrough is as a goodie-goodie again! It's annoying because I was talking to someone who had clocked about 30 hours as a psychopathic slaving cannibal. Which is probably the most realistic reaction to being thrown into a horrible irradiated wasteland. :P

Shoot things. Blow up things. Refuse to do quests for poor sobbing weaklings and watch as their eaten alive by those abominations who will soon become your minions... Mwahahaha...

Damn, i want Fallout3 now...

Played this on xbox 360 an its class, has anyone else played it for xbox an found it makes the controller disconnect when playing the animations in a fight?
Love the damage you can do to enemies and the way you can choose how your character advances through the game.

My stealth character with his new Anchorage addon loot. He's now a Chinese Ninja President! Sword is from the chinese leader, ninja suit (cloaks when you creep!) is from the ninjas, and the wig is from that robot who thought he was the president of the USA.

I was talking about Fallout 3 and Oblivion FYI.

Oh, and there are more than three Bethesda games DK, I count four from TES (with Oblivion being the 4th), and three from fallout.

Trigger

Umm yeah though i dont get why you would steal a president robots hat, there must be somthing else cooler you could steal :D

Tactical nuke maybe?
George bushes old socks?
A packet of Obamas cigarettes?

Aye but you can't wear any of those on your head. You could try to wear Georges old socks I guess, but they might smell a little. I'd also rather not walk into a firefight with a tactical nuke on my head.

D_K_Head
7th February 2009, 02:13 AM
I can imagine that would be a bad idea...

I generally steal any nukes I can find though. They sell for a ton, and always useful to keep about three for the fatman effect.

Vicious Horizon

Fallout 1 and 2 weren't made by Bethesda, only co-worked on in the background x3

And to someone that didn't know about the President wouldn't know that was a spoiler, I would have assumed it was some deranged robot wandering the wastes ranting about the chinese or something xD

D_K_Head

I put two and two together and i'm guessing the enclave is run by a robot now.

[IMG]wig is from that robot who thought he was the president of the USA.

I think THAT robot only thought he was the governor of Pennsylvania. :p

Nice, I haven't got Operation Anchorage yet, probably going to grab it at half-term.

Not technically Fallout 3 related (:p) but meh. Weirdly, Obsidian who are working with Bethesda is the successor studio to Black Isle with a lot of its former staffers... oh and Black Isle also made Fallout 1+2. Its also set near the location of the first two games. Hmmmmmmm.
