View Full Version : D&D - ATK Game

Ok, I'm not sure if I've tried this before with any of you, but I'm in the mood again...

If anyone recognises the name of the post, then you'll know what I'm talking about. For the benefit of those who don't, D&D is an old pen and paper RPG from the days of dark rooms, and LAN parties with attendees in the single units. While it's a bit dated, it's still pretty epic for what it is, and that's a form of game that offers complete freedom, beyond even that offered by fallout, since it's no computer game, but instead a game played with GM (Game Master) who controls what's going on... this means that if you want to pants the king of some small country, you can, and if you want to move up to a roof and pour napalm through the streets before throwing a match down, you also can...

I'm thinking of starting a game for members of ATK. Now, before you roll your eyes and pronounce all interested in the game type total losers, just give it a try. You may be surprised...

Post here if your interested.

NOTE: To get an idea of how it works, visit http://www.d20srd.org/ But remember... this is the entire ruleset, and population guide. Players won't need to know all of this (that's my job.) But you might want to have a look at the "basics races and descriptions" section.

I'm up for it, two of my top five games use the D&D rules (Neverwinter Nights and Baldurs Gate) and a third uses the Star Wars addon version for it (Knights of the Old Republic).

If you need any help DMing DK, I have some experience with it as well. ;)

I have no experience with D&D, but if you're willing to be GM then i'd happily give it a try :D. How would we do it?

DK asked me to help anyone who needs it with making a character, ya'know, all the rules and stuff. So if you want too, ask on steam friends. :p

Oh lord, making a character? Can we have a template or something?

if you want to take part in the first one, which'll probally be some time this weekend, make sure you've created your charactor. Ask bloo for help if you need it.

OK, two little bits of info.

1) You'll need to be free for sunday ~7-8pm so we can start... note that it could last up to 9pm and longer... but first member to tire can call it off past then.

2) For this camp, we'll be using a client called Open RPG, which allows for this sort of thing. Piss easy to use, it shouldn't be a problem if you managed to get through the char sheet editor...

No sadder than everyone here, what with joining an internet community about videogames/ playing a MMO. All things are relative eh.

How many hours have you racked up in WOW now oric?

You play a female character PURELY to sate at a pixel arse while you grind monsters for hours on end for no foreseeable reward beyond a slightly larger e-peen and the ability to take part in some PvP content. There is no ability to play your MMO uniquely, you just follow the path of a million others. If this is what you enjoy, so be it, but this kind of removes your right to call anything, or anyone sad.

Don't be a hypocrite. And D&D isn't as sad as you may think, it's actually fun. It just suffers from a reputation put onto it by the same people that made gaming a nerdy thing back then.

Oh, and does anyone else find that the person that actually plays the MMO is suddenly the expert on socially acceptable gaming?

Isphera
13th March 2009, 11:30 AM
How am I a hypocrite. If anything, all the people who criticized EVE as spreadsheet commander and then started creating the pile of crap which you call a character sheet which is practically a hyped up spread sheet are hypocrites. And how is WoW any comparison to this? WOW is an actual game, whereas this is simply some jumped up novel writing exercise whilst fondling 20 sided dice.

Besides, having been off wow for 6 weeks and still having an active subscription till April, I feel that I have begun to repent my previous mistakes. Now stop being sad people and go get C+C Generals, and come play a proper game, not some essay writing contest.

D_K_Head
13th March 2009, 12:29 PM
DO I sense an irrational hatred here oric? You don't seem to understand how it's played... your just spouting the same hate speeches as others have done before...

It's not an essay writing contest, and it is a real game, but without the restrictions that hound PC games... When you play fallout, you enjoy the freedom of choice, but you can never really do EXACTLY what you want. In D&D, you can. It's not limited by a system, nor by engine problems, nor by bugs. The rulebooks, the stats, hell, even the dice, are optional.

D&D may involve acctual writing (even if it can be played by voice) and a few char sheets, but it's the world created by these sheets, and the freedom provided by the DM, the human, who can understand the way a human thinks, instead of a machine programmed to give you a quest, guide you through it in one, or maybe two or three preplanned routes, and then dump a generic reward on you.

let's have an example. During a nice game of the spreadsheet simulator, I had two charactors under me... now these two were surposed to help a village evacuate and escape from an army on the march... but they didn't do it. The reward was based on how many were saved... so instead of risking it and running, they did the unexpected. They snuck into the camp... and poisioned the entire army.

Now can you say that a game involving a storyline would let you do that? Would halo allow you to change the storyline and instead of saving earth, join with the covenent? Would Half Life allow you to simply kill Alyx, and save a bunch of time? Would GTA:SA just allow you to kill the damn cop who hounds you through the entire game?

D&D may involve writing, but it's about the freedom of being able to do whatever the hell you want, weather it be save those villagers, kill the army, or capture both and sell them into slavery! It's the players damn choice. So yes. It does involve a story. Yes, it does involve d20s, YES it is a proper game, and it's a damn good one at that.
