Google is developing an operating system (OS) for personal computers, in a direct challenge to market leader Microsoft and its Windows system.

Google Chrome OS will be aimed initially at netbooks, the low-cost portable computers that have turned the PC world upside down.

Google said netbooks with Chrome OS could be on sale by the middle of 2010.

"Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS," said the company in a blog.

The news could also be a blow to the open source Linux operating system, which had taken an early lead on netbooks, but then lost out to Microsoft's elderly Windows XP.

For Microsoft the news comes just months before it launches the latest version of its operating system, called Windows 7.

Google confirmed this on their blog here (http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/07/introducing-google-chrome-os.html).

At the time of posting, only one other Chrome OS forum existed, so I went ahead and made my own :p.

I would really appreciate it if you would sign up on the forum here:

If any of you are interested in helping me with this, I will give you moderator.

IT sounds ok, but with the main audience being cheap laptops, i dont see my self using it any time soon. I doubt it will get even close to microsoft, but it is google we are talking about

I don't think anyone will switch to it instantly, but as with most Google products it will be in Beta stages forever and by the time it comes out it will be stunning.

Anyway, sign up on the site (http://www.chromeosboards.com/) guys and stop playing the footy game :p.

I've signed up and even made a thread, looks like it could be a good OS and free alternative to linux

Will the OS be free like Linux? If it is I'll have to try it out on a Virtual Machine.

I'll sign up on the site anyway and help you out Chalex.

Thanks, needs some work as atm it's too much of a mash between OSX and Win7.

Some reactions I got from posting it on the PR forums:

Cheditor;1080705']From tommorow vox will never be seen again, and a few months later this will appear on google Chrome.

Cpl.Small;1080972']Wow Voxy that is freaking awesome :D

Robbi187;1080976']vox, you my friend are a genius :)

:D (Only coincidence that they were all R-COMs, as am I lol)
