View Full Version : Anyone play an instrument?

Okay, I had an idea the other day, but it would only be feasible if enough people played the right instruments. But more on that later. Just post below if you play any musical instruments. Judging by previous knowledge, we might end up with a load of bassists :D
And yes, I am one of them.

Lol most people are gonna say guitar or bass. :p
And yeah I play guitar, mainly acoustic at the moment since I'm so pissed off at how awful my electric is.

OK, well the idea I had was to have an ATK band, where each individual track was recorded by the person on that instrument and then compiled and released. The flaw is an abundance of some instruments - a problem sloved by the fact that not everyone will want to play each song. For example, say the song decided was Tears Don't Fall by BFMV - I can imagine VoX wanting to do the bass part a bit more than me, so he would take it. Likewise, if a BB song was done, you would have to lay ten brick walls in front of it to stop me.
Everyone would get fair input - i.e everyone puts in 2-3 songs there interested in and people work on the best suggestions. And it would be completly flexible and varied. Another theoretical example, we could have Chaz, Me, Chalex, DE and a drummer bang out Bohemian Rhapshody, whilst at the same time, DE and I are working with some others on Enter Sandman.
There are three unanswered questions as to feasability and possibility. One, would anyone be up for trying this. Two, how would you record (Headset mic's to amp, although that requires a lot of tweaking, or find a cheap self-recording setup). And Three, where can we find a drummer. I do have a kit, but I am pretty bad, only being able to ghost play a couple songs with out of time bass pedalage.
Anyway, post up ideas and thoughts. And if your not interested, or haven't posted yet - post up your instruments anyway.

Chalex clearly means he's a rapper when he says he likes singing, seems the biggest prob will be recording it. U culd have had some epic playage at i37 if u had been going Oric :D

There's also the obvious problem that if we're each recording our pieces separately then the timing's gonna be out and the quality will sound weird with each piece recorded with different equipment.
How about we each play a section of the song, filming ourselves playing, then compile it into a vid? I.e. someone does the first verse, then someone else the chorus, then another person does the next verse, and someone does the solo.
Also I don't think choosing a song will be too hard, since there are certain classics in rock such as Walk This Way or Paranoid which everyone likes, plus (rhetorical question) who in the world actually dislikes The Beatles or Led Zeppelin?

I don't dislike the Beatles, I'm just not that into them either.
Like I say, everyone will have different interests and opinions on what songs to do, so we could mix and match it.
EDIT: If we did get to put forward three tracks, I know one of them would have been Time Of Dying by Three Days Grace - mainly because we used it at the beginning of the i31 video.

Guitar.. and atk band would be pretty cool. Not sure if there's a drummer though. Maybe a drum machine?
oh, and AC/DC > Beatles

I just remembered - I was looking for instrumental covers of songs ages ago, and every one of them mentioned a program called EZDrummer, which did the drums for them. If we managed to get it going, then I'm sure someone could work out how to use this properly.
Lineup so far;
Bass - Me, VoX and Snerfs (Good enough for Big Bottom - Spinal Tap)
Guitar - DE, Chaz, DK
Clarinet - Chalex
Vocals - Chalex (female), Me (backing)

Bassist obviously, but that's been said before.
I can handle the drum machine and mixing the overall track, am needed some practice with Reaper and I'm sure after a while, it will all sound cool.

If we use a backing track www.guitarbackingtrack.com is the best site I came across for backing tracks once when looking for them to play along to, although they do contain the bass lines.

I would have to say i dislike all of those :P
I dont like any "clasic" music other than some awsome (actual) clasical pieces (beethoven, greensleves etc)

I dont like some of aerosmith but anyone saying they dont like The beatles/Led zepplin just means they have no taste in real music since it shaped a hell of a lot of modern crap after that.

If that was a line Chaz, the bassline would not be music, it would be the theoretical projection path between me throwing it and the skull of the composer :)
By the sounds of it, people are behind the idea. So can people start throwing out ideas for how we might record something?

It would probably be best if I didn't play the clarinet in this band btw, I was never that epic.
Remember I'm basically away for the next month so won't be able to take a large part in this :(. After that though, I'll be around and up for this.

You can play piano can't you or did I make that up?
If he doesn't, does anyone else? Be useful if we do some cheesy power ballad or Queen. :D

Nah I've never played the piano, apart from the occasional chopsticks tune.
Not sure how that got into your mind though, maybe because my brother plays it.

Guys... we've missed an obvious one here... how about 'Still Alive'? The main riff is just some simple finger picking with the D chord and the more rocky bit is just a few power chords, plus it's a song we all love.
Isphera
15th July 2009, 05:33 PM
The bass bit is only 4 notes repeating throughout isn't it? Perfect for me - don't even have to record it for 5 mins. Record, spam copy paste, send, go back to blowing shit up on EVE :)

Why do a cover? Make our own song!
Go and write a 4-piece song, then write the vocal lyrics, vocal melody and then figure out the backing vocal harmonies.
After that, spend a few months perfecting the song writing, then perfect your performance of the song itself.
I'll see you in a year or so DK.
(I say this with experience as bassist of a 5-piece band, we are still re-writing songs etc, and this is without the vocal melodies actually written, they along with the harmonies are loosely done and improvised. We have been going since this time last year and we only have 1 song or so that we would consider perfected.)
