View Full Version : Another reason I think TotalBiscuit is a moron

Saw this tweet (https://twitter.com/#!/Totalbiscuit/status/142226089907978240) the other day from TotalBiscuit (LoL and occasional SC2 caster at events such as the i-Series and Dreamhack). Now my opinion of him is that he should be nowhere near a microphone for SC2 as he obviously has no idea what he is on about, and his Silver League status can vindicate that (I'm in Bronze and I admit I barely know anything about Protoss or Zerg apart from units and their counters).

I thought it was an interesting statement so I went in search to try and find the game replay. Not only that, the SC2 forum I signed up for today (HotKeyIt) actually had the guy who played him post up the replay. An excerpt from the game chat logs:

14:45 [All] TotalBiscuit: heh BUILD MEHRINE
15:06 [All] CWD: :(
15:10 [All] TotalBiscuit: prtty much a joke what you can do on 2 bases when I'm on 4
15:23 [All] CWD: Dunno man
15:55 [All] TotalBiscuit: you shouldn't have won that and it's bs that you did tbh
15:59 [All] TotalBiscuit: gg i guess

Now I hear you all saying "Marines OP, nerf Terran", but looking at the replay (which can be DL'ed HERE (http://drop.sc/67079)) and the more knowledgeable people over at HotKeyIt, it seems that he was behind on upgrades, didn't drone up to match the number of bases, produced next to no banelings and streamed his units.

Feel free to call me a noob, but if I ever end up playing him on ladder or get a game casted at i-Series, I'm gonna have some fun, cause not only is this guy a complete bigot (see previous rants about his opinion on deaf raiders) but he has no justification to be casting top gamers when it is quite clear he has no idea what he's doing.

He's a bigot because he doesn't believe that deaf raiders have a practical place in high-level raiding, and so I'm going to make a whole thread complaining about how he got frustrated during a game of StarCraft hurr hurr.

TotalBiscuit is a fucking amazing guy. He's one of the few people in the gaming community who's opinion I actually listen to. He regularly does "WTF Is..." videos of indie games which wouldn't get nearly as much coverage if he didn't. He recently did a WTFathon where he gave his first impressions of loads of games over 12 hours, with all donations and his stream revenue going to charity. His SC2 casts are very entertaining when paired with an analytical caster such as Apollo. He regularly posts on gaming communities such as /r/starcraft and Rock Paper Shotgun. He takes a lot of criticism from fat nerds because of the way he looks and how he doesn't handle criticism very well. He knows he is bad at Starcraft, and he is laddering to try and improve and learn more about the game, so he can make more informative casts.

Hating on him because he raged in a SC2 game is quite frankly ridiculous. Everyone gets mad when they're on a losing streak and say stuff they don't really mean. Fuck, pro SC2 players do what he did and you're calling him out for it? Feel free to have your own opinion of him Oric, but I whole-heartedly disagree with you on this one.

Also it's his talent as a caster and a personality which gives him reason to be next to dApollo while casting.

Tasteless isn't the most knowledgeable caster for SC2, which is why Artosis is there, Artosis is the brains, Tasteless is the funny, and is there to calm down Artosis when he goes full retard; you don't necessarily have to have 5 years as a pro-gamer to be a good caster.

The reason I removed the troll DWPS thread because it served no information or legitimate entertainment value to the community outside of simply trolling. This was primarily meant as an outlet of frustation being turned into a discussion, so there's no reason for it to be removed or locked.

lolololol oric thinks the dwps shiz gives value to the community haha

All due respect, I don't really see anything you've contributed to the community aside from poor grammar and time as a community meme.

Restarting Gaming Nights, started Helix Gaming project, done the DWPS two (soon to be three) times, provided TS servers when we lost DCH and were looking for a new sponsor a couple years ago, provided time and effort into helping run the community at differing stages of it's development stretching back all the way to when it was a group of school friends as BRS (immature leave/joins aside :D), honest opinions getting big changes to the community explained and getting them improved for the betterment of the community (not alone in this though, as quite a few people do the same thing)...

Yeah, bunch of duds there (/sarcasm).

Back on topic and needless flaming aside, and mainly addressing Cal's point, I agree that on much of his content, he has obviously put the time in to be knowledgeable and is actually a reasonably interesting presenter (unlike some on YouTube). TBF, he gets on my nerves a little bit sometimes, but that's my opinion so doesn't really weigh into the argument. My main problem is that for SC2 he obviously has no concept on how the game truly works, and without that, it's difficult to even be a play-by-play guy as you can only really say whats going on. Professional sports is the best example of this.

Sure, play-by-play guys are very often someone who never played the game professionally, but regardless of that, they still have an in-depth knowledge of the players on the fields and a good understanding of how the game works. Perfect example of this is in American Football commentating. You get the play-by-play guy that may never have played professionally, but has played in college, but transistioned into the presentation side of it. For that, they constantly learn about all the different roster moves, who's at what position, the implications of each game in the bigger picture etc. But during the play, they have to be able to understand how the game actually functions (e.g formation, likelyhoods of different types of play based on down and distance, personnel that have come in etc.) in order to fufill that job properly.

I'm not saying he has to know how to perfectly split marines or properly engage a baneling attack (because that is what the colour guy, in this case dApollo, who in my opinion is one of the best colour guys out there), but without that fundemental understanding of game mechanics, he will continue to be a poor caster, relying on dApollo to actually tell him whats going on, who then goes on to explain it.

Tasteless/Artosis is actually the perfect way for me to finish this. Tasteless used to play Brood War competitively (as did Artosis) and intended to come over to SC2 and play that professionally as well (before switching to casting after EG left Korea), and thus has a very in-depth knowledge of the game and it's mechanics, thus giving him the perfect knowledgebase to commentate play-by-play.

true say but I don't go making some long ass and super serious competition poll thing about it and there is a line I suppose anywhos tb is entertaining to listen to most of the time and him being a entertainer id think that's all that matters, but if a couple mistakes made due to lack of knowledge makes everyone a moron in this world, so yheaa....

With all due respect, you didn't 'start' Helix Gaming.

Also, Tasteless began casting full-time during BW, not SC2.

Your right, my bad. But my point still stands.

This thread doesn't look like it's coming back, so:

Stemming from THIS (http://www.atkcommunity.com/showthread.php/2535-Open-Letter-regarding-Communities-Structure), we have THIS (http://www.atkcommunity.com/showthread.php/2538-Competive-Clan-Establishment-Prelim-Discussion) and the accompanying name polls. The name change from Aeternus to Helix was a collaberative process, but in terms of the entity now known as Helix Gaming, I started the movement for it.

Vicious Horizon

Well, Helix was established from the League of Legends team, back when Marshy lead the team IIRC, when the group as a whole were discussing Helix as an entity; you then made some threads about it and now claim you were the mastermind and originator of the entire group :P
