FMJ is just a huge political punch in the penis to American values, the entire film follows Pvt. 'Joker' and his thoughts through the Vietnam war. I guess you have needed to watch the rest of the film to understand how great this closing scene is..

Shawshank the Redemption has my all-time favourite ending to a story ever (and I *hate* happy endings usually), I fully admit crying when I watch it. It is another finale where you have to watch the full film to appreciate it however, the bit in the room where it says "So was Red" mainly.
Oh, and it's narrated by Morgan Freeman That is like, instant-fuckin'-win.
It's gotta be the ending of the original Italian Job for me, being a literal cliff hanger (skip the first half of the video):

I think the reason why it ended like this was because back when it was made it was illegal for the 'baddies' in a film to be successful.

The reason it's left like that is because the Director cut off the last 15 minutes of the film! What was meant to happen is that the mafia drive past them and help them off the cliff before stealing the gold, then there was going to be a sequel, but the director felt that the cliffhanger would be so much more awesome, and he's right XD

So they had to leave it on a cliffhanger to give the impression that they might make it away with the gold without going against the law :D

Ending to Shutter Island - doesn't seem that epic or anything, but it has a sort of double twist which is why I liked it. Video won't make much sense if you haven't see the film, but you shouldn't watch it anyway if you don't want to spoil it for yourself:
