Yeah the engine was pretty poor in comparison to Source and UT/Quake. However when you think of the massive scale it had to calculate, and it's age, it wasn't bad at all.
64 players... huge fucking maps... vehicles with full collision...
Yeah... it's a lot better than people give it credit for.
it'd be better if they pushed it to 128 though.

The 2142 engine is a lot more advanced than BF2. An old PR DEV switched to 2142 and has made things such as 3D cockpits where all the instruments work and the ability to adjust the sniper scope based on the distance.

I think, afaik it's not released yet.
The guys name is Mosquill, so look for his channel on YouTube for any updates. I think he left the PR team as they wanted to stay with 2 (due to 3d model reasons AFAIK (as in they still use a lot of vBF2 statics etc)) and went on to 2142 himself. It was all before I was part of the PR team so I'm guessing here.
