Dawn of War 2.

A lot of us here have played and enjoyed the original Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, so you'll be pleased to hear Dawn of War 2 has been announced.

From what I've heard it sounds more like World In Conflict, i.e units taking cover, drop zones rather than buildings, etc, although some of this is only speculation. Other features include having a smaller, more advanced army that you upgrade and improve throughout the campaign, similar to the Honour Guard units in Dark Crusade. So far the only two races that have been confirmed are Orks and Space Marines, which will once again be the Blood Ravens chapter in the campaign, so the story should carry on from Dawn of War 1. Dawn of War 2 should be released in early 2008, with players being able to participate in a Beta of the game if they buy Dawn of War: Soulstorm. All in all what I like most about the news so far is that all the new features are what I wanted the original game to have. A gametrailer video revealed that the eldar will be in DoW2, kinda obvious yeah, but I thought I'd mention it. No link, find it yourself.

Look at the bridge collapsing near the beginning, it looks pretty awesome how the assault marines automatically jet pack off before it falls, and quite funny how the normal marines fall down still in a standing position firing.

There is that one, but also another one that shows the eldar off. It begins with them saying Space Marines and Orks are not alone. Then cuts to an eldar warband.

That IS in game footage. Look at the start, the space marines are in cover, and pop out of it for a few bursts, also there are some marines in a building near the end.

That CGI trailer is awesome, I love the part with the Eldar Ranger.

The gameplay one is a bit naff though, and short.

A good preview about Dawn of War 2.
For the lazy, I'll sum it all up.

- You select a couple of squads per mission, and they're all you get.
- If a character (squad leader/commander) dies, he is ressed if another character walks nearby. Like the Age of Mythology heroes! I assume if they all die, it's game over.
- If a grunt ("lesser squad member") dies. He's dead. There are two ways to get more. Call in a drop pod of reinforcements (once per mission however). The other way is to capture a Strategic Point ("Shrine"), though there aren't huge amounts of them this time, only one per map (or one or two etc). Then you can res your grunts! It also provides Campaign Wide bonuses.
- Lots of consumable items. You get healthpacks which you can use to heal your troops, but they're in limited supply (Your enemy might drop some though). There are armour-piercing rounds, which are great for snipers. All consumables get refreshed at the end of a mission however. So you never begin with no healthpacks.
- Squads gain XP and you put it into one of three areas, health, melee and ranged. If you specialise it unlocks new powers. Health gives a Taunt ability (takes pressure off wounded soldiers and onto uninjured one), ranged gives the obvious "increases range and damage for a short time" buff.
- The campaign is co-op, but we all know that anyway right? It's also non-linear and all that.

How multiplayer works sound very cool, it's interesting to see how even RTS's are slowly shifting towards cooperation over competition.

Note the nameless Force Commander - you make him at the start, which probably means typing in a name, maybe picking a different head model.

It's quite funny to think though, you have a maximum of four squads per mission. Each squad has three men, aside from the lonesome Force Commander, which means in most missions you'll have a total of... 10 guys. :eek:

No Ork campaign? *sadface*.

Hmmm... I'm starting to want DoW2 less and less.. to me it looks just the same as DoW1 but slighty shiner.

It's gonna be much better than DoW1 if it's based off CoH. Trust me.

I know it's gonna work a bit differently, like no buildings and upgrade squads, and that's the attraction for me, but the maps, animations and graphics look pretty similar.

I'm starting to like it more and more because it's basically a RPG in the campaign! But indeed, it does look like a face-lifted DoW1 sometimes. However I remember seeing a video with the UI and I know it sounds stupid, but the new UI makes a difference as well.

(Oh yeah, and the video I just posted has Imperial Guard at 0:40, being supported by Blood Raven's).


EDIT: Also you want E:TW more Chazlene, so naturally everything else will glimmer a little less in comparison. :P

If it has RPG elements, I'll be turned off. I play WoW for 'RPG' elements. I play Dawn of War to blow people up and take their heads off.

those RPG elements are basically there to provide you with more interesting and effective ways to blow people up and take their heads off.

Even so, I have never been keen on them.

Multiplayer video, from some parts of it, it seems the camera is usually fixed on the unit you are focusing on: I really hope that was only optional! The Commander Roles look pretty standard, one for people who love blowing stuff up and explosions, one for people who love micro-management and clicking buttons and one for people who see base building as an art.

There is also a Gamespot On the Spot bit with an interview about multiplayer, it mentions stuff like, as you play games your army will level up and you'll get more awesome looking armour and weapons, it does nothing in-game, except when you look at the enemy and see that his army is fully upgraded you'll be like "Exit Game"!

I can't say I like or hate the sound of multiplayer yet, but Relic have caught on with a trend from DoW - people like playing together, not just against eachother, they want the standard match to be 3v3. Though they're also keeping 1v1 in for those who love to dominate someone.

its luks like there headin towards an rts that isn't just rush the enemy with everything you've got an just rebuild if it fails, u actually have to think and plan, and use STRATERGY to complete the missions. I like the way in the campaigns you get stat points and unlocks u actually feel you achieved something, there was an old warhammer game for pc for like windows 98 it was class and had similar features but was turn based, but u got unlocks and stat points for completeing missions and if squad members died u culd replace them with new unimproved ones, it makes the game more challeneging not just build a huge army and hope they kick shit out of the other huge army/defenses

Indeed, it's about using your units effectively to take the enemy out, rather than taking the safe and easy option of churning out a horde of heavy bolter squads and turreting up!
