My dad gave me a brief rundown yesturday, before that you probably knew a lot more than me. From what he says, the 100 yard pitch is split into 10 yard sections, and the offensive team has 4 attempts to move play into the next 10 yard section, after which they have another 4 attempts and so on until they get to the end.
The quarterback gets the ball and can pass to line runners or try to throw it or run it himself, and the defensive team need to stop him getting to the next line, preferably tackling him further back than when they started.
