I'm sure many won't mind you adding them to your friends list - I prefer to keep mine to friends I've played with for a while and do so on a regular basis, but I'm sure many members are not as anti-social as I am.
If you're in the community group you can do pretty much everything possible with someone as if they were your friend, would recommend you join it.
