    DX9 vs. DX10

Here are some screenshots of the improvements in DX10 over DX9:

In both versions of this underwater shot, waves moving across the surface ripple your view of what is above the water. The difference here is subtle. In the DX9 version, the trees and sky above look like they would above water, except for this ripple. In the DX10 version, the colors above the water are slightly altered, creating a sense that the water you're in is not 100% clear.

If you look closely at the trees in the DX10 version, you can even see the water actually refracts the light into the rainbow.
Many games like Crysis at the moment are not taking full advantage of DX10, so they seem more similar to DX9. The problem regarding DX10 is that you have to have Vista to use it, but Vista itself is a performance issue - so you may in fact get worse performance on DX10 compared to DX9 simply because of Vista.

The only difference between DX9 and DX10:

    OMG BLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM.

oh, and slightly better water and clouds. Apart from that, nothing much has changed.

    Also:

DX9 has shadows, but "dark" parts are still relativly light. DX10 sets realistic contrast between the bright sky and shaded areas to feel more like a real outdoors day.

DX9 seems to use a large, general blur for the depth of field effect when your gun is zoomed. DX10 produces a more realistic effect, keeping certain (in this case distant) objects out of focus without going overboard.

Sorry that I didn't make these images change when you hover over them, but I have disabled HTML on the forums. I do like DX10, but when I build my new PC I will probably just keep XP because of Vista's problems. I would prefer the game to run more smoothly than look a little nicer.

    Re: DX9 vs. DX10

Ive had a dx10 card, its a nice change but its completly pointless if DX10 is locked to vista only.

thats why im using DX9 until its not locked.

Shame that Microsoft will never allow XP users to use DX10

    Re: DX9 vs. DX10

they dont want the money at all, they want to push there new product and gain the market share.

market share is what its all about and thats why they really dont care if you use a pirate copy of windows.

as long as they dont let a gap in the market create a real alternative.

if they have that sorted they can charge whatever they want, when they want.

not saying anyone on these forums runs cracked windows.

I don't see why you all think DX10 isn't much different to DX9, those Crysis screenies look loads better to me in DX10.

    Re: DX9 vs. DX10

its not just that the coding is soooooooo much more efficent compared to DX9, but of course the peformance increase is completly negated by vista.
